Halfqueen

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau, the Māori name for Auckland, Halfqueen develops a DJ practice rooted in global club musics and in a diasporic reading of sounds, nourished by her Fijian and pākehā origins. Her sets move through intersections, collective memory and rapid changes of direction, with attention to the circulations between local scenes, island cultures and dance-music repertoires from different territories. Halfqueen made her mark in the nights of Aotearoa before expanding her playground to international underground scenes, sharing bills with artists as varied as YG, Sister Nancy, Cakes Da Killa and Marc Rebillet. The year 2023 marks a milestone with a residency on BBC Radio 1, followed by dates across Europe and East Asia, from Glastonbury to Horst Music & Arts Festival, Fabric, Oil Shenzhen, Cakeshop Seoul and Circus Tokyo. Alongside her DJ work, Halfqueen produces and programs events, notably through FILTH, a DIY platform and party conceived for QTBIPOC audiences. For Halfqueen, selection work rests on storytelling, the energy of the dancefloor and the creation of party spaces attentive to marginalized communities.
