DJ Spinna

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Vincent Williams performs as DJ Spinna, developing a career at the crossroads of hip-hop, deep house, soul, boogie and electro-funk, having begun working as a producer and DJ in the mid-1990s. DJ Spinna first emerged on the New York independent hip-hop scene with the duo Jigmastas, formed with Kriminul, and later as part of Polyrhythm Addicts, a collective that also included Apani B, Mr. Complex and Shabaam Sahdeeq. His work has circulated through clubs, maxi singles, compilations and remixes, in a register where boom-bap rhythms, supple basslines and textures drawn from soul and funk sit alongside warm, danceable house. He has produced remixes for De La Soul, Mary J. Blige and Stevie Wonder, and has produced for artists such as J-Live, Sadat X and Homeboy Sandman. In his personal discography Heavy Beats Volume 1 appeared in 1999, followed notably by Here to There (2003), Intergalactic Soul (2006), Sonic Smash (2009) and Compositions4 (2015). DJ Spinna is also associated with a culture of mixing and crate digging, visible in several compilations and projects devoted to soul, disco and club repertoires.
