Celtas Cortos
Born in the mid-1980s in Valladolid, Castile and León, Celtas Cortos developed a formula in which Celtic‑inspired folk blends with Spanish rock, with violin, flutes and wind instruments conversing with electric guitars and a rhythm section. Formed in 1986, the group quickly moved from an instrumental repertoire to songs carried by Jesús Cifuentes’s voice, with lyrics ranging from social commentary and popular imagery to more intimate registers. The first album, Salida de emergencia (1989), remains largely instrumental, while Gente impresentable (1990) and Cuéntame un cuento (1991) anchored Celtas Cortos in a hybrid rock scene nourished as much by the traditional music of the Iberian Peninsula as by ska and reggae influences. Across records like Tranquilo majete (1993) and En estos días inciertos (1996), the collective consolidated a sound marked by prominent violin and flute melodies, often festive arrangements, but threaded with social themes. After a very prolific phase in the 1990s, Celtas Cortos underwent several lineup changes and a hiatus in the early 2000s, before resuming recording with Tiendo a complicarme la vida (2003) and later Introversiones (2010), an album of revisited covers in their Celtic folk‑rock aesthetic. Still active on Spanish and European stages, Celtas Cortos continues to champion a blend of rock in Castilian and music of Celtic inspiration, conceived for live performance and constant interaction with the audience.
