Spoegwolf

Formed in Paarl, South Africa, Spoegwolf brings together four musicians from the Afrikaner scene: Danie du Toit, Moskou du Toit, Chris von Wielligh and Albert van der Merwe. The band, initially active under the name Ysterkoei during their high school years, adopted the name Spoegwolf in 2012 with the release of Swaartekrag. Their music falls within alternative rock sung in Afrikaans, featuring melodic songwriting that blends direct guitars, keyboards, folk accents and a darker tension inherited from indie rock, while some tracks also leave room for a more spoken or rapped delivery. After the EP Elektriese Kind in 2014, Spoegwolf expanded its repertoire with the albums Somer (2015), Die Donker Toring (2017) and Koma (2019), followed by See (2020), Wind (2020), Droombrief (2022) and Dryf (2022). The band has also released several short-format works, including Groen and Silwer in 2021, Lente in 2023, and Berge and Eindbestemming in 2024. Active on South Africa’s rock and alternative circuits, Spoegwolf also collaborated with Francois Van Coke on Dagdrome in Suburbia in 2019, continuing a path that links band energy, Afrikaans songwriting and a taste for varied release formats.
