DJ Playero

Under the names DJ Playero, Playero DJ or The Majestic, Pedro Gerardo Torruellas Brito, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1964, is part of the early Puerto Rican underground reggaeton scene. DJ Playero began around the turn of the 1980s and 1990s with productions for Vico C, notably on the EP La Recta Final, and then developed a series of mixtapes where hip‑hop, reggae dancehall and Spanish‑language rap intersect, with a raw aesthetic tied to San Juan’s local circuits. These cassettes, distributed in neighborhoods across the island, accompanied the emergence of a scene that took shape before reggaeton became popular at the end of the decade. DJ Playero also worked with Lisa M, 3‑2 Get Funky, Ranking Stone, Wiso G and Wendellman, in an urban register that mixes Caribbean rhythms, rap phrasing and mixtape formats. His discography notably includes Playero 34 (1994), often cited for the earliest recordings of Daddy Yankee, as well as Playero 37 and Playero 38 (1994), Playero 39: Respect (1995), Playero 40: New Era (1996), Playero 41: Past, Present & Future (1998) and The Majestic (2002). From the 2000s onward, DJ Playero reissued part of his catalogue and remains associated with the memory of Puerto Rican old school.
