JOUBe

Behind JOUBe is Romain Joubert, a Lyon-based musician whose project brings together electronic creation, field recording and the use of the bicycle as a central element of performance. Trained first on electric bass and then double bass, he studied jazz at the CRR of Lyon and the ENM of Villeurbanne before broadening his practice toward more experimental forms, between sound installation, composition for live performance and work linked to the performing arts, notably contemporary dance. JOUBe develops sung electronic music that is rhythmic and organic, built from sonic materials recorded in different contexts, from Greenland’s landscapes to everyday sounds collected in France. A composition residency in 2019 in Greenland, aboard the sailing vessel Atka, helped lay the foundations of JOUBe by combining environmental recordings, voice and electronic structures. On stage, JOUBe integrates a prepared bicycle that becomes both a source of sound, a rhythmic support and an extension of the set, in a hybrid form situated between concert, performance and sound documentary. The JOUBe project thus links a danceable musical approach with questions of movement, ecology and the musician’s physical presence.
