Gustavo Beytelmann
Born in 1945 in Venado Tuerto, in Argentina’s Santa Fe province, Gustavo Beytelmann learned piano as a child. He studied music at the University of Rosario and composition with Francisco Kröpfl. Beytelmann’s career sits between Argentine tango, film music and contemporary composition, with a style that brings tango forms into dialogue with contrapuntal writing and a chamber-music approach. In Argentina he composed for film—among others La Maffia, Quebracho and Los Gauchos Judios—and worked as musical director of the Microfon label. After leaving Argentina for political reasons, he settled in Paris in 1976. He accompanied Astor Piazzolla on a European tour in 1977, took part in the group Tiempo Argentino and then formed a trio with Juan José Mosalini and Patrice Caratini that was active on European stages for twelve years. His composing activity subsequently continued between France, Germany and Italy, for film, radio, television and the concert hall. Documented recordings include La Biblia (1974) with Ensamble Musical de Buenos Aires and Olympia (1977) with Astor Piazzolla y su Octeto electrónico.
