L.E.S.

Born in 1966 as Leshan Lewis, L.E.S. figures in New York hip‑hop history from Queensbridge in the Queens, where he grew up in the same environment as Nas. A producer and DJ, L.E.S. developed a precise East Coast sound built around soul and jazz loops, crisp, dry rhythms, and musical writing that is often more understated than spectacular. His first widely recognized recording milestone came with “Life’s a Bitch” on Nas’s Illmatic in 1994, followed by AZ’s “Sugar Hill” on Doe or Die in 1995. From the mid‑1990s onward, L.E.S. worked regularly with Nas’s circle and the New York rap scene, producing tracks for Mobb Deep, The Firm, Capone‑N‑Noreaga, Cormega, Bravehearts and QB’s Finest. His career also expanded to productions made with Poke & Tone for Nas on It Was Written (1996) and for Will Smith on Big Willie Style (1997), as well as collaborations with Cory Rooney on Blaque’s “Bring It All to Me” and Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real” in 2001. Well into the 2000s, L.E.S. remained linked to Nas’s world, contributing songs to Nastradamus (1999), The Lost Tapes (2002), Street’s Disciple (2004) and Hip Hop Is Dead (2006), before more sporadically producing for artists such as Jay Rock, Busta Rhymes and Freeway.
