Eija Kantola
Born in Pori, Finland, in 1966, Eija Kantola is part of the Finnish iskelmä tradition, at the crossroads of popular song, tango and a melodic style associated with dance music scenes. She began performing at a very young age and launched her recording career in 1988 under the name Eijariitta with the album Samppanjaruusu, before adopting her current name in 1992 — the year she was crowned Tangokuningatar at the Tangomarkkinat festival in Seinäjoki. Her trajectory solidified through the 1990s with albums such as Kiitos tästä vuodesta (1992), Yön hiljaisuus (1994), Tänään (1995), Katseet (1997) and Sata suudelmaa (1998), a repertoire focused on ballads, Finnish tango and straightforwardly orchestrated popular music. Kantola continued this path in the 2000s and 2010s with Kylmä kuuma ja kaunis (2000), Hyppy tuntemattomaan (2002), Legendaa (2005), Käärmetanssi (2008), Peili (2012), Kadonneet laulut (2016) and Kipinä (2021). Her discography also includes collaborative projects with Anneli Saaristo, Marjorie, Marita Taavitsainen and Saija Varjus, placing her within a lasting network of Finnish song.
