Zig Zags

Formed in Los Angeles in 2010 around guitarist and singer Jed Maheu, Zig Zags occupy a space between heavy metal, punk rock and garage, with a fast, dry and confrontational sound that mixes hardcore urgency with riffs drawn from speed metal and 1970s hard rock. The band’s trajectory was built in the Californian underground before expanding to wider punk and metal circuits in the US and Europe. After their self-titled debut in 2012, the trio continued in the same vein with Running Out of Red (2014) and They’ll Never Take Us Alive (2016), developing denser songwriting without sacrificing their direct format. Zig Zags have also gravitated around the West Coast garage scene, working with Ty Segall and John Dwyer and releasing on labels such as In The Red, Castle Face and RidingEasy. Remaining centred on Jed Maheu, the only original member, the band today features Sean Hoffman on bass and Jeff Murray on drums. In 2024, Strange Masters revisited and re-recorded parts of the group’s repertoire with a tighter approach faithful to Zig Zags’ abrasive identity.
