Nick Schofield
Rooted in the Canadian experimental scene, composer and electronic musician Nick Schofield develops an approach to ambient music informed by his studies in electroacoustics at Concordia University in Montreal. Originally from Ottawa and active between Ottawa and Montreal, Schofield focuses on slow, immersive pieces where synthesizer pads, spare melodic motifs and natural resonances construct contemplative listening spaces. His first album, Water Sine, released in 2017, laid the groundwork for work centered on the physiological effects of sound, conceived particularly to accompany rest and the night. With Glass Gallery in 2019, inspired by the architecture of the Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, Schofield deepened the dialogue between built environment and sound perception through a minimal ambient language. Ambient Ensemble, released in 2021, broadened this research by combining piano, electronic textures and extended reverberations to explore the collective, almost choral dimension of his universe. Alongside his compositional work, Schofield participates in various collaborative projects within Montreal's experimental community and performs on stages specialized in electronic and ambient music, notably at festivals such as MUTEK, consolidating a practice oriented toward attentive listening and the highlighting of micro-variations in sound.
