Sook‐Yin Lee

Active on the Canadian independent scenes since the late 1980s, Sook‑Yin Lee has built a career that blends music, radio, film and performance. Born in Vancouver, she first gained notice as the singer of the alternative rock band Bob’s Your Uncle, rooted in the local underground. After moving to Toronto, Lee launched a solo career in which indie rock, experimental pop and spoken‑word elements intersect, notably on the albums "Lavinia’s Tongue?" (1994) and "Wigs ’n’ Guns" (1996), which established a direct and introspective songwriting voice. At the same time, her visibility as a VJ on MuchMusic and later as a host on CBC Radio One—particularly on "Definitely Not the Opera"—put her in touch with diverse North American music scenes and nourished a wide range of collaborations and projects. In the 2010s she formed the duo Jooj with musician Adam Litovitz, exploring electronic pop with experimental textures on the albums "Jooj" (2015) and "Jooj Two" (2021). Lee’s work is marked by a constant interplay between musical composition, acting and film directing, with a particular focus on intimate narratives and themes of identity, sexuality and emotional relationships.
