Diego del Morao

Born in Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia, in 1978, Diego del Morao — born Diego Moreno Jiménez — belongs to a line of flamenco artists from Jerez: he is the son of guitarist Moraíto Chico, with whom he first learned the guitar before completing his training with El Carbonero. Diego del Morao began his professional career accompanying singers, notably La Macanita, and went on to become a prominent guitarist alongside flamenco figures such as Diego el Cigala, Niña Pastori, José Mercé, Montse Cortés, La Tana, Potito and El Torta. His playing remains rooted in the Jerez style, with a strong sense of compás, very rhythmic articulation and a touch that links the tradition of flamenco toque with more contemporary expressions of the genre. Highly active as an accompanist on stage and in the studio, Diego del Morao also released an album under his own name, Orate, in 2010. In today’s flamenco landscape he thus occupies a distinctive position as a guitarist both grounded in the family Morao school and involved in collaborations that span several generations of flamenco.
