Kalupto
Born from the meeting in 2017 of singer, pianist and composer Calypso and guitarist Victor at a jazz school, Kalupto develops a project where intimate songwriting intersects with anglophone indie folk. Propelled by a voice shaped by soul and a spare piano approach, the duo Kalupto relies on guitars with pronounced, sometimes almost lyrical melodic lines to establish progressive, restrained atmospheres. Calypso’s writing addresses vulnerability, doubt and the desire for repair directly, with lyrics that often take the form of half‑whispered confidences, as in the track “Head Down”, built around the momentum needed to move despite the fear of failure. The name Kalupto, drawn from ancient Greek and the singer’s given name, evokes the idea of hiding and highlights an aesthetic of restraint, visible on stage as well, where the group often plays backlit and appears more as silhouettes than as frontal figures. Through this staging choice and music close to prayer or incantation, Kalupto carves out a space between alternative pop, folk and jazz heritage, keeping the voice–guitar relationship at the heart of its sonic identity.
