Orthodox

Formed in Seville in 2004 by Marco Serrato, Ricardo Jiménez and Borja Díaz, Orthodox began as a power trio before temporarily operating as a duo between 2014 and 2018. The Spanish band builds a sound rooted in doom metal but open to freer forms where drone, improvisation, ambient and traces of free jazz intersect, marked by a strong sense of repetition, slow tempos and a ritualised tension. This identity coalesced on Gran Poder (2006) and continued with Amanecer en Puerta Oscura (2007) and Sentencia (2009), three records often read as a first aesthetic and conceptual cycle. Orthodox then pursued this shift in language on Ba’al (2011), Axis (2015), Supreme (2017) and Κρέας (2018). On stage, Orthodox moved between festivals and underground networks in Spain and internationally, appearing at Roadburn, Hellfest and Primavera Sound, and sharing bills with groups such as Voivod and Corrosion of Conformity. The band’s visual universe, nourished by religious imagery, symbolism and pagan references, accompanies music that remains linked to heavy metal while regularly diverging from its most codified forms.
