Carbon Based Lifeforms
Active since the mid-1990s in Gothenburg, Sweden, Carbon Based Lifeforms is an ambient and downtempo duo formed by Johannes Hedberg and Daniel Vadestrid. Initially convened under the name Notch, the project shifted toward a more atmospheric approach and adopted its current name in 1996, with its first extended piece released as The Path in 1998. Carbon Based Lifeforms gradually gained international recognition in the ambient sphere in the early 2000s with the albums Hydroponic Garden (2003) and World of Sleepers (2006), continuing that trajectory with Interloper (2009) and Twentythree (2011), before returning with Derelicts in 2017, Stochastic in 2021 and Seeker in 2023. Their music blends expansive synthetic pads, slow melodic motifs, flexible rhythms and textures reminiscent of field recordings, spanning a range that intersects spacious ambient, contemplative electronica and psychedelic influences. The duo regularly translates this universe into live performances, adapting their compositions to immersive concert formats drawn from electronic and experimental scenes.
