Lisa Nilsson
Born in Tyresö, in Stockholm County, Lisa Nilsson has, since the late 1980s, developed a career that sits between pop, soul, vocal jazz and the Swedish 'visa' tradition (a form of folk song). After early English-language releases—Lean on Love (1989) and Indestructible (1991)—and a participation in Melodifestivalen in 1989, she reached a wider audience with Himlen runt hörnet (1992), a Swedish-language record largely written by Mauro Scocco and produced by Johan Ekelund. That turning point established a more personal style, supported by a supple delivery and a range combining melodic pop, subdued soul and Nordic songcraft. The collaboration continued on Till Morelia (1995), before Nilsson asserted her songwriting more strongly on Viva (2000) and Små rum (2001), the latter marked by a more acoustic atmosphere and the involvement of musicians associated with the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. In the 2000s she also explored Brazilian-inspired material with Hotel Vermont 609 (2006) and Sambou Sambou (2009), where bossa nova and tropicália intersect with Swedish-language adaptations. Her trajectory has also included stage and television work and occasional collaborations—most notably with Joakim Berg—while maintaining a steady link between chanson, adult pop and jazz.
