Mary Black

Born in Dublin in 1955 into a family closely associated with traditional Irish music, Mary Black began singing as a child and later performed in the city’s clubs with her brothers. She made her professional debut in the mid-1970s with the folk group General Humbert and launched her solo career with the album Mary Black in 1982. Initially rooted in Celtic folk and Irish balladry, she was known for a restrained vocal style and a careful, text-focused delivery before broadening her repertoire toward more contemporary songwriting at the crossroads of folk, country and acoustic pop. Her collaboration with musician-producer Declan Sinnott accompanied this evolution throughout the 1980s. At the same time Mary Black joined De Dannan and toured in Europe and the United States, reinforcing her place on the Irish folk scene. Albums such as Collected (1984), Without the Fanfare (1985), By the Time It Gets Dark (1987), No Frontiers (1989), Babes in the Wood (1991) and The Holy Ground (1993) marked this period. She later released Circus (1995), Shine (1997), Speaking with the Angel (1999), Full Tide (2005) and Stories from the Steeples (2011), while taking part in various collaborative projects, including A Woman’s Heart, and working with Joan Baez.
