Christy Moore

Born in Newbridge, County Kildare, Christy Moore established himself at the end of the 1960s as a leading figure in the Irish folk revival with a direct vocal style, a highly rhythmic acoustic guitar approach, and the use of the bodhrán. After cutting his teeth on the England folk club circuit before returning to prominence in Ireland, Moore first recorded Paddy on the Road in 1969 with Dominic Behan, followed by Prosperous in 1972, a pivotal record that brought together several musicians who would form Planxty. A founding member of this essential Irish traditional folk group, he later joined Moving Hearts in the early 1980s, a lineup that broadened his repertoire toward more electric and contemporary forms. As a solo artist, Christy Moore developed an approach in which ballads, traditional songs, and social-commentary lyrics coexist, with a constant focus on interpretation and storytelling. His discography includes Ride On (1984), Ordinary Man (1985), Voyage (1989), Traveller (1999), Burning Times (2005), Listen (2009), Folk Tale (2011), Where I Come From (2013), Flying Into Mystery (2021), and A Terrible Beauty (2024).
