Califone

Born in Chicago in 1997 around Tim Rutili after the end of Red Red Meat, Califone was initially established as a flexible project — part band, part collective laboratory — with regular contributions from musicians such as Tim Hurley, Ben Massarella and Brian Deck. From the start Califone mixed a foundation of folk, blues and alt-country with lo-fi textures, sound collages and an experimental approach that makes room for dissonance, fractured rhythms and often spare melodies. After the early EPs compiled on Sometimes Good Weather Follows Bad People (2000), the band refined this aesthetic on Roomsound (2001) and Quicksand/Cradlesnakes (2003), before broadening their songwriting on Heron King Blues (2004) and Roots & Crowns (2006). Califone’s trajectory also encompassed cross-disciplinary forms: All My Friends Are Funeral Singers (2009) was tied to a film written and directed by Rutili, and Stitches (2013), recorded partly outside Chicago, is marked by drier sonic landscapes. After a quieter period, Califone returned with Echo Mine (2020), composed for a choreography by Robyn Mineko Williams, and Villagers (2023), where the writing retains its experimental edge while opening up to clearer semi-acoustic arrangements. The Villager’s Companion was released in 2025.
