Johnny Dowd

Long established in Ithaca, New York, Johnny Dowd has been developing since the late 1990s a singular songwriting voice at the intersection of Americana, indie rock and narrative folk. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1948 and having passed through Memphis and Oklahoma before settling in upstate New York, Dowd made a late arrival on the record scene with Wrong Side of Memphis in 1998, followed by Pictures from Life’s Other Side (1999) and Temporary Shelter (2000), albums that laid the foundations of an oeuvre built from fragmented tales, marginal characters and pronounced dark humor. His often spoken-sung vocal delivery, lyrics focused on American everyday life, family, religion and ordinary violence, and a blend of rough guitars, dry rhythms and occasionally electronic arrangements place him in a distinctive corner of alt-country. Backed on stage and in the studio by a regular core of musicians from the Ithaca scene, he alternates small-group projects with more electric lineups, tours regularly in Europe and North America, and over the years has accumulated occasional collaborations and appearances on compilations linked to roots and experimental music.
