Caifanes

Born in Mexico in the late 1980s, Caifanes emerged within the rock en español wave by blending alternative rock, new wave, post‑punk and explicit references to Mexican musical traditions and imagery. The band formed around Saúl Hernández (vocals, guitar) and Alfonso André (drums), later joined by figures such as Sabo Romo and Diego Herrera and subsequently by guitarist Alejandro Marcovich, and first made a name for themselves on the capital’s underground rock scene before reaching a wider audience. The debut album, simply titled Caifanes (1988), established a sound of dark guitars, new‑wave‑tinged keyboards and Spanish lyrics; it was followed by El Diablito (1990), where Caifanes sharpened the contrasts between rock energy and more psychedelic atmospheres. With El silencio (1992) the group refined an aesthetic in which direct melodies, rhythms inspired by Mexican tradition and lyrics full of urban and mystical imagery coexist. El nervio del volcán (1994) marked a further stage in Caifanes’ discography, more upfront sonically while retaining a melodic approach. After a split in 1995 the members gradually reunited on stage and Caifanes reformed in the early 2010s around a core of Saúl Hernández and Alfonso André, continuing to perform in Mexico, the United States and Latin America as part of rock en español tours and festivals.
