Matthew Bourne

Born in Avebury, England, in 1977 and long established in West Yorkshire, Matthew Bourne has since the early 2000s developed a career situated between jazz, experimental music, contemporary composition and electronic forms. A self-taught pianist after beginnings on trombone and cello, he emerged on the British scene with projects such as The Electric Dr M, Distortion Trio or Bourne/Davis/Kane, while forging numerous collaborations with musicians from avant-garde jazz and the margins of rock and improvised music, among them Franck Vigroux, Marc Ribot, Paul Dunmall, Annette Peacock or Nightports. Bourne's playing is distinguished by a free approach to the piano, often fragmented, repetitive or lyrical depending on context, as well as a lasting interest in minimalist moods, oblique textures and the crossovers between writing and improvisation. After The Molde Concert in 2005, Bourne developed his language further with Montauk Variations in 2012, followed by moogmemory in 2016, Isotach in 2017, Irrealis in 2022 and This Is Not For You. in 2024. He also appears in hybrid formats such as Radioland: Radio-Activity Revisited in 2015 with Franck Vigroux and Antoine Schmitt, or on Nightports w/ Matthew Bourne in 2018, where his pianistic universe dialogues with slow, atmospheric and decentralised electronics.
