Neville Staple

Born in the Manchester parish of Jamaica in 1955, Neville Staple moved to England as a child, first to Rugby and then to Coventry, a city that proved central to his development. Before joining bands, he cut his teeth on the local sound system scene of the 1970s, where he developed a toasting style rooted in Jamaican culture — a blend of spoken delivery, singing and rhythmic interjection. That approach was later absorbed into British ska, 2 Tone and the new wave scene when he joined The Specials in the late 1970s after initially orbiting the group. His voice and stage presence defined that period, and in the early 1980s he continued with Fun Boy Three alongside Terry Hall and Lynval Golding. In the 1990s he was involved in Special Beat with Ranking Roger, at a time when ska enjoyed a renewed wave of popularity, notably in the United States, where he also worked with several punk and ska outfits. Returning to the foreground with his own projects, he formed the Neville Staple Band in the mid-2000s and released The Rude Boy Returns (2004), Ska Crazy (2014), Return of Judge Roughneck & Dub Specials (2017) and From the Specials & Beyond (2021). His trajectory thus links the genre’s Jamaican roots, Coventry’s history and multiple generations of British ska.
