Coffins

Formed in Tokyo in 1996, Coffins develop a very dense death-doom rooted in early death metal with touches of crust, within an intentionally harsh and compact aesthetic. Coffins’ trajectory first ran through the underground circuit—with demos, EPs, splits and compilations that gradually established the band on Japan’s extreme scenes and then internationally. That identity was fixed on several full-length studio albums, from Mortuary in Darkness (2005) to Buried Death (2008), then The Fleshland (2013) and Beyond the Circular Demise (2019). From record to record, Coffins remain committed to songwriting built on massive riffs, often leaden tempos, a cavernous vocal and a very physical approach to sound, without trying to smooth its edges. Line-up changes did not alter this general course, which is founded on continuity rather than rupture. Coffins therefore occupies a stable place in the metal underground, at the crossroads of doom, death and an abrasive punk sensibility, with a discography where short formats count as much as albums.
