Fjarill
Born in Hamburg in 2004, Fjarill brings together Swedish pianist and singer Aino Löwenmark and South African violinist and singer Hanmari Spiegel. The duo creates an acoustic folk-pop with Nordic hues, at times bordering on chamber music, where piano, violin and voices take center stage. Fjarill’s songs are performed in Swedish and Afrikaans, immediately placing their repertoire in a dialogue between multiple stories and cultural landscapes. After an acclaimed debut in Germany with Stark in 2006, Fjarill released Pilgrim in 2008 and Livet in 2010, and consolidated their stage approach with Live in Hamburg in 2012. They developed their writing on Tiden in 2013, with contributions from Dominic Miller, Jürgen Spiegel and Omar Rodriguez Calvo, introducing more varied tempos and colours. Subsequent releases include Stilla Tyd (2016), Kom Hem (2018) exploring the notion of home, Midsommar (2019) and Poësi (2021), built from texts by Pär Lagerkvist and Nelly Sachs. Winner of the RUTH award in 2011, Fjarill continues from Hamburg a trajectory situated between folk, chamber pop and the world scene, most recently extended by the album Walden in 2023.
