The Miserable Rich

Based in Brighton on England’s south coast, The Miserable Rich belong to a strain of chamber pop that blends intimate folk with chamber-music arrangements. Formed in the mid-2000s around singer James de Malplaquet and cellist William Calderbank, the band is built as an expanded string ensemble, with violin, cello, double bass and guitar at the heart of the compositions. The Miserable Rich emerged from the local independent scene connected to the Willkommen collective, playing small-venue shows and European tours, often in acoustic formats and unusual locations. Their debut album, Twelve Ways To Count (2008), established a songwriting style centered on voice, strings and a discreet rhythm section; Of Flight & Fury (2010) refined the mix between folk balladry and orchestrated pop. With Miss You In The Days (2011), the band steered further toward a narrative, slightly theatrical atmosphere while retaining predominantly acoustic instrumentation. After a period of intense activity followed by a hiatus, the group has reappeared on stage only sporadically, The Miserable Rich remaining associated with a strand of British pop in which songs rely on the textures and dynamics of a small chamber ensemble.
