Oulu Sinfonia
Based in Oulu in northern Finland, Oulu Sinfonia is part of a local orchestral history that dates back to the first attempts to form a permanent ensemble in 1856. The orchestra took its present shape in 1937 under the name Oulu Orchestra, became the Municipal Orchestra of Oulu in 1954, was established as a municipal institution in 1961, and adopted the name Oulu Sinfonia in 2005. Resident at the Oulu Music Centre since 1983, where it mainly performs in the Madetoja Hall, Oulu Sinfonia operates in the field of classical music and the symphonic repertoire, focusing on orchestral concerts, concertos and Finnish and European composers. Its trajectory intersected early with Finnish musical life, notably through the Oulu Music Society founded in 1901, which worked with Toivo Kuula and Jean Sibelius. Conductors who have marked its development include Arvo Volmer, Dima Slobodeniouk, Anna‑Maria Helsing — the first woman to hold this post in the orchestra’s history — and Johannes Gustavsson, under whom Oulu Sinfonia recorded for the Ondine label. Since 2022 the musical direction has been held by Rumon Gamba.
