The Savage Rose

Formed in Copenhagen in 1967, The Savage Rose originally brought together brothers Thomas and Anders Koppel with singer Annisette Hansen and several musicians from the Danish rock scene, at a time marked by the rise of European psychedelia. The group developed a psychedelic and progressive rock sound driven by organ, with touches of folk, classical elements and Balkan influences, and an expressive, often theatrical vocal style. Their early albums, including “The Savage Rose” (1968), “In the Plain” (1968), “Travelin’” (1969) and “Your Daily Gift” (1970), were accompanied by tours across Europe and the United States. In the early 1970s The Savage Rose moved toward more conceptual projects, notably the ballet music “Dødens Triumf” (1972) for the Royal Danish Ballet, and gradually strengthened a political dimension in their lyrics. After frequent lineup changes and a quieter period in the 1980s, the band reactivated around Annisette and Thomas Koppel with “Black Angel” (1995), then pursued a more stripped-down rock informed by gospel and soul on albums such as “Tameless” (1998), “Love and Freedom” (2007), “Roots of the Wasteland” (2014) and “Homeless” (2017). Despite these shifts, The Savage Rose remained centered on Annisette’s voice and on a blend of rock, social poetry and ballads often arranged acoustically.
