Mathias Heise
Based in Copenhagen, Danish harmonica player and composer Mathias Heise focuses on the chromatic harmonica at the intersection of modern jazz, fusion and improvised music. Born in 1993, Heise established himself early on the Danish scene with an approach that combines formal jazz training, a taste for funk and rock rhythms and a structured, melodic writing style often conceived for small ensembles. As leader of his group Mathias Heise Quadrillion, he explores a dense fusion sound in which the harmonica assumes the role of the principal voice alongside an electric rhythm section, featuring long pieces, pronounced tempo changes and a strong emphasis on harmonic textures. Alongside Mathias Heise Quadrillion, the artist develops more intimate formats—duo and trio—and occasional collaborations with musicians from the Scandinavian jazz and pop scenes. Heise’s playing is characterized by a highly articulated approach to improvisation, an extended use of the instrument’s range and a constant interplay between precise composition and freer passages, placing him among a generation of European musicians navigating between jazz tradition and contemporary fusion language.
