Thomas Helmig
Born in 1964 in Egå, a suburb of Aarhus in Denmark, Thomas Helmig began as a self-taught pianist and later taught himself guitar and drums. In the early 1980s he played in local groups such as Kaksi Kuggas Band and Elevatordrengene. An exchange stay in the United States, where he worked with musicians from Detroit, had a lasting impact on his songwriting and explains the prominent role that soul and the Motown heritage later assumed in his music alongside a pop-rock foundation. Helmig launched his solo career with Thomas (1985), followed by 2 (1986), Kære Maskine (1987) and Vejen Væk (1988) — albums that established a Danish song format characterized by more urgent arrangements and an interpretation often tinged with rhythm and blues. In the 1990s he leaned further into soul with Rhythm (1992) and then recorded in English on Say When (1993) and Stupid Man (1994). He has since maintained a steady discography, including IsItYouIsItMe (2001), El Camino (2004), Tommy Boy (2006), KH Helmig (2013), Takker (2018) and Sortedam (2024). Alongside his own projects he also writes and produces for other Danish artists, among them Søs Fenger, Hanne Boel and Sanne Salomonsen.
