John Otway
Born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, John Otway has, since the early 1970s, operated within a British vein that blends pop, rock, folk and punk’s nervous energy, marked by a deliberately offbeat writing style and a pronounced sense of burlesque. After a first single in 1972, Otway gained greater visibility in 1977 during the punk surge, notably through television appearances in the UK and his work with Wild Willy Barrett, a central collaborator in his career. The duo released John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett in 1977, Deep & Meaningless in 1978 and Way & Bar in 1980, while Otway also pursued a solo trajectory with Where Did I Go Right? in 1979 and All Balls & No Willy in 1982. His style rests on straightforward, melodic and often spare songs, between folk-rock, eccentric pop and a punk attitude. In the 1990s John Otway continued to tour regularly across the UK, collaborated with Attila the Stockbroker on Cheryl, a Rock Opera in 1991 and returned to new recordings with Premature Adulation in 1995. His subsequent discography includes OT-AIR (2004), Bunsen Burner – The Album (2006), 40 Odd Years with Wild Willy Barrett (2011) and Montserrat (2017), alongside sustained live activity as a solo artist, in duo and with a band.
