Annie and the Caldwells

In West Point, Mississippi, Annie and the Caldwells bring together multiple generations around a gospel soul sound marked by disco and funk. Annie Caldwell’s journey begins in Aberdeen in the 1970s with the Staples Jr. Singers, before she met guitarist Willie Joe Caldwell, who became both her husband and musical partner. The group Annie and the Caldwells later coalesced into a family band, where the voices of Annie, her daughters Deborah Caldwell Moore and Anjessica Caldwell, and their goddaughter Toni Rivers converse with a rhythm section anchored by sons Willie Jr. on bass and Abel Aquarius on drums. Nourished by the music heard at home and in church, Annie and the Caldwells’ repertoire blends choir harmonies, dancefloor groove and liturgical inspiration, directly addressing questions of faith, relationships, female solidarity and family trials. The song “Wrong,” sung by Deborah, exemplifies this songwriting rooted in personal experience and arranged as a call-and-response with the rest of the group. Largely recorded in a West Point church with production by Ahmed Gallab, aka Sinkane, the band’s studio work extends the energy of their performances in local communities and on festival stages, where their concerts help circulate this distinctive mix of contemporary gospel and family soul.
