Burnt Friedman

Born in Coburg, Germany in 1965, Bernd Friedmann has, since the late 1980s, under the artist name Burnt Friedman, developed a body of work situated at the intersection of electronic music, dub, jazz, ambient and rhythmic experimentation. His work is distinguished by flexible structures, pronounced polyrhythms, and a constant attention to textures, in an approach that blends abstraction, slow groove and sonic exploration. Also active under several aliases and in different projects, Burnt Friedman traversed the 1990s with Drome, Nonplace Urban Field or Flanger, the latter led by Atom™, before solo releases such as Plays Love Songs (1999), Con Ritmo (2000), First Night Forever (2007), Zokuhen (2012), The Pestle (2017), Potential For Havoc (2020) and Hexenschuss (2023). His trajectory also includes regular collaborations with saxophonist Hayden Chisholm, David Sylvian and Steve Jansen within Nine Horses, as well as a long partnership with Jaki Liebezeit, former drummer of Can, documented notably by the Secret Rhythms series begun in 2002. Based in Berlin since the late 2000s, Burnt Friedman also founded the labels Nonplace in 2000 and Risque in 2016, two entities that extend an independent practice at the crossroads of electronic, improvised and experimental scenes.
