The Veldt
Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the late 1980s around twin brothers Daniel and Danny Chavis, The Veldt emerged within an independent scene where shoegaze, dream pop and soul intersected. The band quickly developed a hybrid aesthetic of saturated guitars, reverb-drenched layers and vocals phrased close to R&B, often described as a bridge between African-American culture and the British noise legacy. Later based in New York, The Veldt played alternative circuits in the US and Europe, sharing bills with shoegaze and experimental rock acts. The release of Afrodisiac in 1994 on a major label marked a milestone: the record captured a sound that combined heavy rhythms, subtle electronic textures and soulful melodies. Production on some recordings by Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) helped refine this approach, balancing ethereal atmospheres with noise tension. After a period performing as Apollo Heights in the 2000s, the Chavis brothers revived The Veldt in the 2010s, increasing touring and short-format releases. Live, The Veldt emphasizes lengthy pieces built on hypnotic loops and a wall of sound that leaves clear space for the vocals, continuing a trajectory in which shoegaze confronts soul and hip‑hop without adopting their most obvious conventions.
