Tom Rowlands
Born in Kingston upon Thames in 1971 and partly raised in Henley-on-Thames, Tom Rowlands was shaped early on by rock, hip-hop and electronic music, with influences ranging from Kraftwerk and New Order to Public Enemy. After attending the University of Manchester, Rowlands reunited there with Ed Simons, a childhood friend with whom he began DJing in the early 1990s before founding the duo The Chemical Brothers. In that context, Rowlands helped establish a British sound that blended big beat, breakbeat, acid house, techno and psychedelic textures, conceived both for the club and for more elaborated album formats. Records such as Exit Planet Dust (1995), Dig Your Own Hole (1997) and Surrender (1999) punctuate this trajectory and demonstrate a writing style that combines driving rhythms, sample collages and a broader melodic sensibility. Over time, Rowlands has also pursued activities outside the duo, releasing productions and remixes under his own name that remain tied to the electronic scene and British club culture.
