Brujeria
Formed in Los Angeles in 1989, Brujeria developed a blend of grindcore, death metal and extreme metal sung almost entirely in Spanish, with imagery inspired by Mexico and lyrics focused on violence, religion, sexuality, immigration, narcotrafficking and politics. Conceived from the outset as a collective project with masked identities, Brujeria long operated under pseudonyms and a shifting lineup, bringing together over time musicians linked to various international metal scenes, among them Juan Brujo, Dino Cazares, Shane Embury, Jeff Walker, Raymond Herrera and Nick Barker. After the early EPs ¡Demoniaco! (1990) and ¡Machetazos! (1992), Brujeria left its mark on the 1990s with Matando Güeros (1993) and Raza Odiada (1995), followed by Brujerizmo in 2000. Initially rare on stage, the band began performing more regularly from the 2000s and toured Latin America, the United States and Europe. After a long recording hiatus, Brujeria returned with Pocho Aztlan (2016) and Esto Es Brujeria (2023), in a format increasingly oriented toward compact, fast and frontal deathgrind. Brujeria’s recent history is also marked by the passing of Pinche Peach and then Juan Brujo in 2024.
