Malte Marten

Based in Berlin, Malte Marten develops music centered on the handpan, at the crossroads of ambient, light neoclassical and melodic writing designed for attentive listening. His career first took shape in public space and in video formats widely distributed online, before gaining another dimension within the duo Yatao, active in the second half of the 2010s, where he explores a handpan approach that is rhythmic, atmospheric and accessible. From 2021, Malte Marten continues under his own name with a more personal body of work, based on pared-down instrumental pieces, calm textures and repetitive motifs that create a sense of suspended tension. His repertoire sits in a contemporary scene where meditative music, acoustic ambient and compositions intended for concert as well as relaxation or introspection intersect. Alongside his solo releases, Malte Marten develops a transmission activity around the handpan, with pedagogical content and training aimed at musicians both beginners and seasoned. This dual presence on stage and in teaching accompanies the evolution of a project that links instrumental practice, digital circulation and minimalist aesthetics.
