In Gowan Ring
Launched in the early 1990s by singer and multi-instrumentalist B’eirth, In Gowan Ring sits within American folk with affinities to neofolk, psychedelic, and medieval strands, built around a dense acoustic universe where guitar, harp, flute, cittern, and more discreet electronic textures intersect. Initially tied to B’eirth’s background, who largely grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later settled in Portland, Oregon, In Gowan Ring evolves as a project with variable geometry, nourished by guest musicians depending on the period. The music of In Gowan Ring takes shape in slow, often melancholic ballads, with writing marked by vegetal and animal imagery, as well as a taste for British folk traditions and certain ancient motifs. Among the verifiable discography landmarks are Love Charms in 1994, The Twin Trees in 1997, The Glinting Spade in 1999, Compendium 1994-2000 in 2000, and Hazel Steps Through a Weathered Home in 2002. Across these recordings, In Gowan Ring evolves its approach between pastoral sparseness, drones, more ritualistic sung forms, and freer compositions, in a trajectory that has also crossed the underground folk and experimental scenes.
