Dope Saint Jude

Born Catherine Saint Jude Pretorius in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised in Elsies River on the Cape Flats, Dope Saint Jude develops a writing voice that links hip-hop, R&B, and club influences in a direct, rhythmic format firmly anchored in South African social realities. Before her solo career, she performed from 2011 under the name Saint Dude in Cape Town’s drag king scene, then refocused her work on music from 2013. Dope Saint Jude circulated her name early with the track Keep In Touch alongside Angel-Ho in 2015, followed by the self-produced EP Reimagine in 2016. Her approach blends upfront rap, sung choruses, dance-energy, and references to local queer cultures, with particular attention to issues of gender, sexuality, and race. In 2017, Dope Saint Jude appeared on Jlin's Black Origami and performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival as well as at Stanford. She followed with the 2018 EP Resilient, led by Grrrl Like, and Higher Self in 2022. Having spent some time in the United Kingdom, Dope Saint Jude operates across hip-hop, electronic, and alternative scenes, in an aesthetic where dense bass, club tempos, and clear diction serve a personal and political message.
