Branko

Behind Branko is the Portuguese producer João Barbosa, active from Lisbon in a field that links electronic music, kuduro, bass music and Afro-diasporic rhythms. A founding member of Buraka Som Sistema and co‑founder of the label Enchufada, Branko emerged in the 2000s as the Lisbon scene was reconfiguring the flows between European club music, Angolan legacies and global pop. As a solo artist he has developed a more mobile approach — between dry percussion, sung melodic motifs and club-oriented formats — across four albums, including Soma (2024). His career also includes productions and collaborations with M.I.A., Pierre Kwenders, Princess Nokia, Sango and Mr. Carmack, as well as sustained work with Lusophone artists such as Dino D’Santiago, Mayra Andrade, Pedro Mafama, EU.CLIDES and Rita Vian. Branko extends this approach through a residency on NTS Radio and the documentary series Club Atlas, produced with RTP, which explores various local scenes and their links to Lisbon.
