Carl Stone

Born in Los Angeles in 1953, Carl Stone has since the early 1970s developed a body of work situated between electroacoustic music, sound collage and minimalism, with a focus on the gradual transformation of recorded materials, whether they come from speech, pre-existing music or everyday sounds. Trained at the California Institute of the Arts under Morton Subotnick and James Tenney, Carl Stone first engaged in group experiments in the Los Angeles area before devoting himself almost exclusively to electronic composition. His pieces, often built on loops, fragmentations and very slow glides, circulated as much in North American experimental scenes as in Europe and Asia, with a lasting link to Japan where he has stayed several times. This trajectory is reflected in albums such as Woo Lae Oak (1981, released in 1983), Kamiya Bar (1995), Four Pieces (1989), Exusiai (1998, released in 1999), Al Noor (2007), Himalaya (2017) or Stolen Car (2020). Carl Stone has also collaborated with Otomo Yoshihide, Min Xiao-Fen, Haco, Miki Yui or Tetsu Inoue, while composing for dance, video, acoustic ensembles and radiophonic contexts.
