Boxcutter
Under the name Boxcutter, Barry Lynn has, since the mid-2000s, been developing an electronic trajectory born in Northern Ireland, at the crossroads of early dubstep, IDM, dub, ambient, drum and bass, and a pronounced taste for oblique structures. First spotted by releases on Hotflush and then Planet Mu, Boxcutter released Oneiric in 2006, followed by Glyphic in 2007 and Arecibo Message in 2009, three records that already show a mobile writing, with broken rhythms, misty textures, and bass inherited from both dub and the UK scene. The Dissolve, released in 2011, further shifts the project toward more melodic and psychedelic forms, with Brian Greene contributing on some tracks. In parallel, Barry Lynn founded Kinnego Records in 2009, which became an important framework for his own productions and those of close artists. The rest of Boxcutter's discography includes Sheene in 2018, Béaloideas in 2020, and Cirrus Dubs in 2021, where one hears a more contemplative writing, often tied to diffuse soundscapes and a less frontally pulsating rhythm. Boxcutter has also developed other aliases, including The Host, and collaborated with FaltyDL within NeferTT. On stage, Barry Lynn regularly performs his electronic music with guitar or bass live, in contexts ranging from clubs to specialized festivals.
