Alan Doyle

Rooted in Petty Harbour, a fishing village in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Alan Doyle first made his mark in the early 1990s as the singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter for the folk-rock band Great Big Sea, a group that blends traditional songs from Atlantic Canada with Celtic influences and pop-rock energy. After two decades of intensive touring with Great Big Sea, Doyle launched a solo career in 2012 with the album “Boy on Bridge,” followed by “So Let’s Go” in 2015 and “A Week at the Warehouse” in 2017, expanding his writing in a more personal direction while remaining close to maritime sounds, singalong choruses, and arrangements rooted in contemporary folk. The EPs “Rough Side Out” (2020) and “Back to the Harbour” (2021) continue this exploration, ranging from acoustic ballads and call-and-response songs to more rock-leaning tracks, often inspired by coastal life and the cultures of Eastern Canada. Alongside his work as a singer-songwriter, Doyle occasionally collaborates with other musicians from the Anglophone folk and rock scenes and appears in film and television, which feeds the narrative imagery of his songs. Balancing traditional heritage with accessible pop formats, Alan Doyle has carved out a path that secures Newfoundland music a lasting place in the North American landscape.
