Waltari

Formed in Helsinki in 1986 around Kärtsy Hatakka, Jariot Lehtinen and Sale Suomalainen, Waltari built itself on a principle of colliding styles that quickly set it apart on the Finnish rock scene. The band, later expanded with musicians including guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, blends metal, punk, alternative rock, funk, pop, rap and electronic rhythms in an often edgy songwriting approach, with rapid but structured shifts of tone. After early EPs in the late 1980s, Waltari established its foundations with Monk Punk in 1991 and Torcha! in 1992, before broadening its sound on So Fine! in 1994 and Big Bang in 1995, an album marked by a more pronounced use of techno and industrial textures. The second half of the 1990s saw Waltari increase its crossovers, from the symphonic project Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! Death Metal Symphony in Deep C in 1996 to Space Avenue in 1997, produced with Rhys Fulber and featuring contributions from Apocalyptica. Remaining active on European stages, Waltari continued this trajectory with albums such as Channel Nordica with Angelit in 2000, Rare Species in 2004, Blood Sample in 2005, Below Zero in 2009, You Are Waltari in 2015 and Global Rock in 2020, maintaining that fluid mix of metal, rock and electronics.
