Boney M.

Formed in West Berlin in the mid‑1970s around German producer Frank Farian, Boney M. was built around a vocal quartet from the Caribbean: Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell from Aruba. Originally conceived as a studio project, Boney M. drew attention in Europe with the single "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" in 1975 and cemented its place on the disco scene with "Daddy Cool" and the album "Take the Heat off Me" in 1976. The group developed a blend of Euro‑disco, pop and reggae influences, characterised by danceable rhythms, soulful backing vocals and simple melodic lines, often relying on covers or reinterpretations such as "Sunny" or "Rivers of Babylon". The albums "Love for Sale" (1977), "Nightflight to Venus" (1978) and "Oceans of Fantasy" (1979) were accompanied by a strong television and stage presence, driven by Bobby Farrell’s choreography. In the early 1980s Boney M. gradually shifted toward a more synth‑oriented pop with "Boonoonoonoos" (1981) and "Ten Thousand Lightyears" (1984), before fragmenting into several touring lineups that kept the Boney M. repertoire active on international stages.
