Aleksi Perälä
Born in 1976 in Vantaa, Finland, Aleksi Perälä has been developing a prolific electronic oeuvre since the late 1980s, positioned between braindance, techno, ambient, breakbeat, drum and bass and microtonal experimentation. Initially active under the names Ovuca and Astrobotnia, he emerged on the Rephlex label in the late 1990s with Lactavent (1999), then Onclements (2000) and Wasted Sunday (2001) — records where fragmented rhythms, oblique melodies and an IDM-adjacent sensibility were already central. As Astrobotnia he released, among others, Astrobotnia Part 1 and Astrobotnia Part 3 in 2002, and that same year collaborated with Cylob on Cylobotnia. Associated with the Rephlex-linked braindance scene, Aleksi Perälä performed in contexts that mixed club-oriented electronics with more abstract sound research, before continuing under his own name with Project V (2007), Boomblaster (2009) and the Mental Union series. From 2011 he launched AP Musik and refocused much of his output around the Colundi system, which steers his compositions toward irregular rhythmic architectures, precise timbres and untempered chords. Series such as The Colundi Sequence from 2014, and later Spectrum, Midnight Sun, CYCLES, UNITY and GAIA, extend this approach, often organized into highly structured sets and tracks with coded titles.
