Alejandro Escovedo
Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1951 into a Mexican‑American family of musicians, Alejandro Escovedo developed musically between the late‑1970s California punk scene and the Texan roots revival. After debuting with San Francisco punk band The Nuns, he moved toward a blend of rock, country and Mexican influences with Rank and File and later the Austin‑based True Believers. His solo career began in the early 1990s with Gravity (1992) and Thirteen Years (1994), featuring often narrative songs driven by electric guitars, slow ballads and careful string arrangements. Across albums such as A Man Under the Influence (2001), The Boxing Mirror (2006) and Real Animal (2008), he revisits his punk years, family ties and life on the road, collaborating with producers like Tony Visconti and musicians from the American indie‑rock scene. Long established in Austin’s musical landscape, Escovedo alternates between electric bands and more acoustic formats, explores identity and migration on The Crossing (2018) and reworks parts of his catalogue on Echo Dancing (2024), confirming a songwriting that intertwines American rock, Chicano heritage and intimate storytelling.
