Gary Lewis & The Playboys
Formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s, Gary Lewis & The Playboys were part of the American pop-rock wave driven by vocal harmonies and straightforward melodies. Led by singer-drummer Gary Lewis, the son of actor and comedian Jerry Lewis, the band drew attention with club performances and then at Disneyland, before signing with Liberty Records. In the studio, Gary Lewis & The Playboys worked with producer Snuff Garrett, who oversaw a run of tightly crafted singles built around bright guitars, close-knit backing vocals, and soft rock-leaning rhythms. Between 1965 and 1966, several songs—including “This Diamond Ring,” “Count Me In,” “Save Your Heart for Me,” and “She’s Just My Style”—charted in the United States and cemented the group’s place in the pop landscape of the era. This period also saw a succession of studio albums, notably “This Diamond Ring” (1965), “A Session with Gary Lewis & The Playboys” (1965), “Everybody Loves a Clown” (1965), and “She’s Just My Style” (1966), on which the band refined a palette moving between pop rock, ballads, and touches of sunshine pop. Gary Lewis’s conscription in the late 1960s slowed their recording activity, and the group subsequently focused on concerts and nostalgia tours, with Gary Lewis & The Playboys remaining identified with that initial run of recordings that encapsulates the essence of their aesthetic.
