DJ Lycox

Born in Portugal to an Angolan family, DJ Lycox developed in the Lisbon area, where a club scene marked by exchanges between lusophone Africa and Europe emerged. A DJ, producer and vocalist, he is affiliated with the crew Tia Maria Produções and the label Príncipe Discos, two important touchstones in his career. He appeared early with Tia Maria Produções on the EP Tá Tipo Já Não Vamos Morrer in 2014, before releasing his solo album Sonhos & Pesadelos in 2017. DJ Lycox’s work sits within the Lisbon batida, at the intersection of kuduro, tarraxo and a dry, syncopated, highly percussive club electronics. His tracks move through short loops, rhythmic breaks, taut bass lines and fragmented melodic motifs, with particular attention to the dynamics of the body and space. First noticed in the Lisbon scene, DJ Lycox has since performed on club stages and at festivals across Europe, while maintaining a clear link to the rhythmic forms and diasporic heritages that run through his music.
